Our Purpose

every day we read, write, and do research in English as the main medium for communicating ideas in academic settings, and yet we often find ourselves using language to escape our daily routines and creating new spaces beyond the boundaries of academic expression. Whether originated in the comforting arms of a mother language or in the thrilling paths of a ‘foreign’ one, poetry has the power to change perspectives, sounds, and lives only when shared. For this reason, the purpose of Multi- Verse: poetry beyond borders (Columbia University Poetry Club) is to create a space where graduate students who write or translate poetry in English as their second language or in any other languages and medium, work on literary criticism, or love reading or performing poetry can find a space to meet and share. The goal is to nurture an encounter between different perspectives on poetic texts, whether in their original languages or in their English translation through regular meetings and initiatives
